Meet Craig Thomas, Director ofOperations

Strong construction delivery does not happen by accident. It takes talented project teams, clear processes, and the operational leadership to bring both together consistently. At Blackrete Builders, Craig Thomas, our Director of Operations, is the person who makes sure all three are working in the same direction.

Craig oversees how projects are executed and delivered across the business. His role sits at the intersection of people, process, and performance, ensuring that the systems, teams, and standards Blackrete depends on are working the way they should, on every project, at every stage of the build.

Delivering Complex Projects Across Victoria

Craig’s project experience spans a wide range of construction types, scales, and technical demands, which gives him a grounded understanding of what different projects actually require to be delivered well.

In the mixed-use and high-rise category, Craig’s experience includes the $100M Customs House development, a seven-storey, 57-unit luxury residential project, and Cortile Verde, an $18M mid-rise residential project delivered within a constrained urban infill location where logistics and sequencing required careful management throughout.

On the seismic upgrade and concrete remediation side, Craig has worked on the Customs House seismic upgrade, a $6M project involving the structural joining of a four-storey facade to a new concrete superstructure, as well as the Dunsmuir Lodge seismic upgrade for Homewood Ravensview, a $4M project within a working mental health and addiction treatment facility where operational continuity and site sensitivity were central to the work.

On the institutional and government side, Craig has contributed to projects at the University of Victoria, including the $3M Engineering and Computer Science Lab, which incorporated specialized engineered strong-floor and strong-wall systems, and the $1.1M expansion of the National Centre for Indigenous Laws.

That range of project types, from seismic retrofits in occupied facilities to high-rise concrete superstructures and institutional builds, reflects the kind of operational breadth that genuine construction leadership requires.

Why Operational Leadership Matters

Operations is not always the most visible part of a construction business, but its impact is felt on every project. When teams are well-coordinated, processes are clear, and delivery standards are consistently applied, construction runs the way it should. When those things are missing, even well-planned projects can fall short.

Craig’s core competencies reflect exactly what effective operational leadership requires: team and operational leadership, project execution and delivery, process optimization, and a consistent focus on client satisfaction and service excellence. These are not abstract qualities, they show up in how projects are staffed, how problems are resolved, how subcontractors are managed, and how clients experience working with Blackrete from the first meeting through to project handover.

What Craig Brings to Blackrete

At Blackrete, we believe that building great projects means building great relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and the communities we work in. Craig’s approach reflects that belief in practice. His collaborative mindset and focus on continuous improvement make him a consistent presence across the operational side of the business, and his ability to bring clarity and structure to complex situations is something the wider Blackrete team draws on regularly.

Whether the project is a seismic upgrade in an occupied building, a high-rise concrete superstructure, or a complex institutional build, Craig’s role is to make sure the operational foundations are in place so that the project team can focus on delivering.

That is what strong operations looks like. And it is what Craig Thomas brings to Blackrete Builders every day.
