Most people don’t go through a construction project every day. It’s a big investment, there’s a lot happening at once, and it’s not always easy to know what progress actually looks like from the outside. At Blackrete Builders, we think that’s exactly why communication matters as much as the construction itself. Here’s what that looks like in practice
How does Blackrete manage communication during a project?
We run construction as a structured process built on regular communication. That means scheduled meetings, consistent reporting on schedule and cost, and a clear process for tracking issues and changes as they come up. Nothing gets lost in a text thread or buried in an email chain.
Every detail is shared in real time through Procore, our project management platform. Procore gives clients direct visibility into where the project stands, what’s been completed, what’s coming up, and any items that need attention. You don’t have to wait for a weekly call to know what’s happening on your site.
What does Blackrete track during construction?
A lot happens between groundbreaking and final completion. We actively monitor and manage all of it, including trade coordination, procurement and long-lead items, milestone tracking, schedule performance, cost reporting, and risk. When something needs attention, we’re on it early, before it has a chance to become a bigger problem. On site, that means strong supervision, organized communication between all parties, accurate inspection records, and prompt correction of deficiencies so work can keep moving forward without avoidable delays.
What happens when issues come up during construction?
ssues come up on every project, but the difference is how they’re handled. At Blackrete, we have a clear process for tracking and resolving issues and changes as they arise, so nothing sits unresolved and clients always know the status. Our goal is to catch problems early and respond quickly, keeping the schedule and budget on track wherever possible.
What does the construction process look like from start to finish?
From the first day on site to final completion, our process is designed to give clients confidence that the project is being actively managed. Here’s a general picture of how it unfolds:
Mobilization and site setup. Before major work begins, we get the site organized, trades coordinated, and a detailed schedule in place. Procurement of long-lead items is already underway from preconstruction, so there are no surprises waiting on materials.
Active construction. This is where the work happens. Regular meetings, ongoing cost and schedule reporting, and real-time updates through Procore keep everyone aligned. Inspections are coordinated as required and deficiencies are addressed promptly.
Closeout. As the project wraps up, we manage the completion of all outstanding work, obtain required certificates and sign-offs, and make sure the handover is smooth and well-documented. Clients receive everything they need to operate and maintain the building going forward.
Why does construction management matter for clients in Victoria, BC?
Construction in Victoria comes with its own set of considerations: a busy trades market, specific permitting requirements through the City of Victoria, and projects that often involve complex sites or occupied buildings. Good construction management isn’t just about staying on schedule but it’s also about anticipating the conditions you’re working in and planning accordingly.
